I love Gogol, but the best way to handle the loss of the second part of Dead Souls is to read the surviving portions of the second part of Dead Souls. They’re not good. The image of Gogol burning the manuscript has far more drama and vitality than the writing in survives of the manuscript (which is surprisingly a lot).
